Dealer conversation below, picture sort-of related because Honda.

"Hi this is _____ from _____ Honda. We are following up on your internet inquiry.

Are you still in the market for a Honda?"

-"I'm a consulatant, I am shopping for a buyer that is interested in a Honda."

"Oh, well when would you like to come into the dealership?"

-"I don't go to dealerships, I communicate via phone or email with sales staff to negotiate pricing."

"O.k. well, when can your customer come to the dealership."

-"When you guys give me the best price on the car in writing."

"Uh, that is normally not how it works. We usually discuss pricing when they come in."

-"Let me put it this way...when you buy a TV you shop around and determine who has the lowest price. Then you go to that store or order online. You know how much it will cost before to go and see it right?

"Uh...yeah."

-"That is what my customers want and that is why they hire me. They are not going to drive an hour to your dealership without knowing exactly what the vehicle will cost."

"So what do we have to do to get your business."

-"That is easy, give us the cheapest price for the car we want."

"O.k. I will have someone get back to you."

When I was buying my Dakota, I walked away from no less than 4 dealers who wanted to play the game. I ended up hooking up with a fleet buyer who understood that I was totally willing to wait to get what I wanted. And because of that, my name's on the window sticker that I keep in the glove box:

Cheers,

Tom

Our family once went to a Honda dealership to find a Si for my brother, they told us negotiating was pointless as everyone who buys a Honda pays sticker.

See the problem is they think you are of the "old person/family" demographic Honda buyer. You need to add more VTEC and YOs to get their attention.

The problem I have with this is the "low price" approach is (usually) the local dealership has spent time doing the test drive…only to have some other dealer beat them by what, $500?

Tell ya what, I'll be the guy that has no overhead, out in the boonies, and I'll rake in the sales by beating all the other guys on price.

When we bought our 2007 Outback, we went in to the dealer at 4:45 PM on Dec 31st....I had a check made out for what we were willing to pay (straight sale-no trade in)....I couldn't believe it, but they went for it.

The car listed for 28k and we offered them 20,500.

I think the fact that it was painted two-tone shit brown might have helped and the fact it was a leftover from the model year before.
